A Family picture

You are now looking at the 33rd president of the USA
Harry Truman, his wife and daughter. From the outset it is
quite obvious what we are looking at in this picture, but let us
take the "surgeon scalpel" and "peel the skin" of the scene shown
in this picture.

The relationships between the figures in the photo are clear: Who is "in" - Harry
and daughter - and who is left out: the mother and wife.

How does she feel about it? Bad, very bad. She is in her inner world away from the two people who are physically so close to her, hands and legs touching and her back is bent forward (deep sorrow? heavy burden?). She is looking to a point in the space away from her husband and daughter. She does not hide from the camera what she feels: Detached, totally within herself, escaping to something away from the unpleasant present. This "something" seems to be the relationships between the father and daughter who leave her out.

The legs of the father and the daughter are close to each other whereas the legs of the husband and wife are more distant. Harry's left foot is positioned in a way which creates a barrier between himself and his daughter. In contrary, his right foot is withdrawn in as not to block his daughter access to him. There is a scent of intimacy between Harry and his daughter. She places her two hands in his lap. Actually in his loins area, he puts his right hand on her thigh as they both look at each other in an unmistaken love and affection.
